Anicca means "change" or "impermanance," and alongside with Dukkha and Anatta, it is considered one of the nonnegotiable aspects of our existence as living things. We all ponder this from time to time, because it is so impossible to avoid. This book is a collection of quotes from many traditions on the nature of Anicca.

DUKKHA was the reason I wanted to start Moth Books. I fell in love with this concept of dukkha, and found all of these wonderful quotes on dukkha, and thought: "These would make great little books. I could make them!"
As is the actual nature of dukkha, things did not go as planned. I had thought I could make them by hand and sell them for fun. I got permissions for all the quotes, but I found I wasn't good at making really nice books... and the idea of selling ideas that are not mine -- and more importantly, are wonderful to share -- became more and more distasteful. But I was still in love with the idea of MOTH books, "Books Made with My Own Two Hands." So, what to do? So, this. Here is my first Moth Book, DUKKHA, which I've decided will exist as a slideshow in my forest to share with everyone who happens to wander this way. Please enjoy. I am making a career change soon which will allow me more quality time for writing fiction and making these precious Moth Books. I haven't been able to do anything with them for almost a year now, which has been both heartbreaking and embarrassing.
I am coming out of a cocoon! Here it is, thanks to Chris's photography. The new cover for Dukkha, my first Moth Book. I need permission and/or replacements for ten more quotes. Oh, and I need to figure out how to make the printer work. I anticipate it will all come together with a minimum of frustration... or dukkha. Below is the Moth Book emblem. Everything about the Moth Books project is delightful. Everyone I have contacted about quotes for my first book, Dukkha, has been not only willing to participate, but supportive and kind. The Moth Books stamp I scored on Etsy is beautiful. I even received a beautiful book of poetry from the editor of one of the contributors, the poet J.H. Martin. It's very soothing to work on: I am working on the final format as I wait for quote permission.
One very esteemed friend said Dukkha (and its sister Anicca) are accessible, meaningful, amazing, spiritual. Oh, and note to self. On next book, do publisher-permission-requests first: they take longer to get back. |
